The textured pattern instruction does not account for adding a stitch each time 2 stitches are knit together. Also, is the pattern knitted on the wrong side as well as the right side? So confusing!

Hi Marie,
Thank you for pointing this out. I went back to the original vintage instructions to check this carefully.
The increases and decreases in the textured yoke are intentional. Row 1 increases stitches within the pattern, and those additional stitches are subsequently accounted for by the decreases — particularly the P3 tog (purl 3 together) instructions in Row 6 and again in Row 12. So you should not add an extra stitch every time you work a decrease unless the row specifically tells you to make an increase.
And yes, the textured pattern is worked on both the right side and wrong side. The 12 numbered rows form one complete pattern sequence, so each row should be worked in order rather than treating the textured instructions as right-side rows only.
I agree that the original vintage wording makes this much more confusing than it needs to be, and I appreciate you bringing it to my attention. If you tell me which row you're currently working, I'd be very happy to walk through that row with you stitch by stitch.
Best wishes,
Petr
